A New Way To Navigate

A New Way To Navigate

Wayfinding Project Launches For Downtown Lexington

Main Street Lexington and Lexington and the Rockbridge Area Tourism have announced an innovative wayfinding project that will allow for easier navigation through downtown for visitors and residents alike.

This initiative, which launched on Monday, May 13, leverages the Main Street Lexington website (mainstreetlexington.org) and Tourism’s explore.lexingtonvirginia. com web platform to provide a convenient and interactive solution for wayfinding, enhancing navigation through Lexington’s historic downtown and enabling effortless discovery of local businesses.

By visiting mainstreetlexington. org and selecting the Explore tab, users will gain immediate access to a comprehensive map and directory. Whether the user is searching for local eateries, boutiques, outdoor activities or historic landmarks, the Downtown Wayfinding portal will serve as a gateway to opportunities throughout the commercial district. This project also represents the first phase of a comprehensive directory of the downtown area’s businesses and services. Those who use the portal and find it helpful are encouraged to let local merchants know.

Additionally, MSL’s printed downtown maps – available at the MSL office, the Lexington Visitor Center and many downtown businesses – will feature QR codes that take users directly to the Downtown Wayfinding portal on the MSL website. QR codes that link directly to this portal may also be displayed at local businesses. More information can be added as the project progresses, including details about self-guided walking tours and other downtown attractions.

Main Street Lexington Executive Director Rebecca Logan expressed her enthusiasm about the wayfinding project’s potential impact on the community.

“This project was inspired by a suggestion from the city’s Downtown Enhancement Plan to place informational kiosks in the commercial district,” Logan said. “Instead of physical structures, our Economic Vitality Committee chose to go fully digital by pairing Tourism’s technology with our website and an accompanying QR code. This portal will be accessible anywhere, and it will also be easy to maintain at no additional cost.”

The Rockbridge Community Health Foundation has supported the wayfinding project to ensure its successful implementation. “Their dedication to the health and welfare of the community aligns well with this effort and its goal to encourage everyone to spend time exploring our walkable downtown,” said Logan.

DOWNTOWN KIOSKS were originally proposed in Lexington’s Downtown Enhancement Plan to provide information to visitors and local residents, but a Main Street Lexington committee decided to go all-digital with the idea, leading to the just launched wayfinding portal. (Steve Shires photo)
