April 16, 1936 – Dec. 31, 2022 Born in Richmond, to the late Benjamin Clifford Goode and Mary Williamson Goode, Phebe began her life on her mother’s birthday.
She was preceded in death by her brother, David Ross Goode.
Phebe is survived by her loving husband of nearly 64 years, Lewis “Pete” Holladay III; sister, Mary Goode Henry; sons, Jim Holladay (Ellen) and David Holladay (Mandy); and daughter, Katherine Zampolin (John); as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
A graduate of Westhampton College of University of Richmond, Phebe was an artist with a distinctive style all her own. She furthered her education with a Master of Fine Arts from Madison College (JMU). Phebe shared her artistic talent and passion with students, family, and friends. She taught art in Richmond Public Schools, summer fine arts workshops in Lexington, and for many years at Grymes Memorial School in Orange.
She also worked as assistant librarian at Southern Seminary Junior College, and as a substitute teacher in Front Royal, Waynesboro and Orange. Phebe and Pete renovated the Holladay family home in Orange, and created the Holladay House Bed and Breakfast, which they operated for 12 years. Later she and Pete retired to their 200-year-old log cabin in Rockbridge County.
Phebe loved to organize family summer vacations to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Nearly every summer of their married life, Phebe and Pete spent time at Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head. They rented the same large cottage for the last 30 years, each time filled with family and friends.
After a struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease, Phebe passed away peacefully in her home, with Pete at her side.
A celebration of Phebe’s life will be held at a later date.
