In high school playoff action on Monday, both the Parry McCluer baseball and softball teams lost in the Pioneer District finals, while the Rockbridge County boys tennis team and the PM girls tennis team bowed out in the regional quarterfinals. The RC girls soccer team (8-8-0 overall, 6-6-0 district), which concluded the regular season on a three-game winning streak, found out it will advance to the Region 3C tournament, as the eighth seed, and will play at top-seeded Western Albemarle on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
The top-seeded PM baseball team (13-6 overall, 9-1 district) made a valiant effort to trim an 11-run deficit in the sixth inning against second-seeded Narrows (15-4, 9-2), but the Green Wave held on for a 16-12 road win in a game that lasted about three hours in Buena Vista. The Fighting Blues, who won both regular-season games against Narrows, are scheduled to play host to Giles, the fourth seed from the Mountain Empire District, on Thursday. Check back here for the game time.
On the softball field, the top-seeded Blues (9-8, 6-1) found themselves in a back-and-forth battle against second-seeded Eastern Montgomery (14-5, 5-2), with the Mustangs dealing PM a 9-7 loss. The teams had split their two regular-season contests before the Blues won the first-place game 8-3 on May 9 in Buchanan. In Monday’s game, errors hurt the Blues. PM led 7-5 after Payton Emore hit a fly ball to left field to bring home two runs in the fifth, but the Mustangs scored two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to earn the win. The Blues will play host for a Region 1C quarterfinal game on Thursday. Check back here for the game time and opponent.
The PM girls tennis team (9-5, 4-2) concluded the team portion of its season with a 5-2 home loss to Grayson County in the Region 1C quarterfinals at the Southern Virginia University courts.
