RC Boys Lax Closes Regular Season With 2-1 Week
The Rockbridge County High School boys lacrosse team lost in overtime to Cave Spring on Monday of last week before rebounding to beat William Byrd and Christiansburg as part of a three-game road trip to finish the regular season.
The 2-1 week vaulted the Wildcats into the top four of the Region 4D standings. On Saturday afternoon, the Wildcats concluded their season with an 8-7 home loss to Cave Spring in the Region 4D quarterfinals. (See separate story). The Wildcats finished at 6-8 overall.
In last Monday’s game, the Knights (7-7) came from behind to down the Wildcats 11-10 in an extra session at Bogle Field.
Andrew Kelly paced the RC attack with four goals, and he also won 15-of-24 faceoffs. John Brooke totaled one goal and five assists, and Jack Jensen made eight saves. But the ’Cats couldn’t make an early 4-1 advantage stand up, as Cave rallied for the overtime win.
The Wildcats bounced back two nights later for a 7-5 victory over Byrd (7-7). Kelly and Quincy Speers posted two goals apiece, with Kelly also securing 8-of-15 draws, and Jensen made eight more saves between the pipes.
RC head coach Jay Whitelock also praised the “best effort of the year” by the Wildcats’ defense, highlighting the performance of Daniel Grimm, Sawyer Hattersley, Cole Peters and Caleb Robinson.
The ’Cats wrapped up the week by zooming past Christiansburg 18-3. RC took a 10-0 lead by halftime and was able to get most of the roster involved in the second half against the winless Blue Demons (0-11).
Kelly won 20-of-25 faceoffs and notched six goals, while Brooke matched his numbers from Monday’s contest with a goal and five assists. Seven different Wildcats scored in the game.
