Solar-powered water systems for livestock, controlled grazing systems, and weed control strategies will be featured topics at a Farm Conservation Field Day on Wednesday, June 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Fairfield.
The Natural Bridge Soil and Water Conser vat ion District with support from the Rockbridge Cattlemen’s Association, Riverside Family Farm, and Virginia Cooperative Extension will host the field day at the Houser Farm located at 60 Red Gate Lane, Fairfield. Parking and registration will be in the field directly across Swope Road from the entrance to Red Gate Lane, so look for directional signage on June 5.
Attendees will get to see some of the latest technologies for land management, understand the management principles that can improve farm profitability, and discuss how Rockbridge has helped improve water quality through the application of these practices. Those attending will get to see a demonstration of vegetation control under and around fences and take part in a discussion of the importance of farm fence and water infrastructure to protecting water quality.
Thanks go to the Houser Farm for opening their farm to the public on June 5 so people can see conservation practices in action and appreciate the benefits and challenges of conservation for profitable farming.
A free lunch at the South River Fire Department will follow the field portion of the program so those wishing to attend are asked to pre-register by calling the Natural Bridge Soil and Water Conservation District at (540) 319-6453 by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 31.
