Firefighters Sought For This Year’s Challenge

Contest Part Of Celebrate Rockbridge

The second annual Firefighters Challenge will be held in conjunction with the second annual Celebrate Rockbridge event sponsored by the Rockbridge Breakfast Club and will be held at the Virginia Horse Center on Sunday, June 23, from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

The referee for this year’s Firefighters Challenge will be J.D. Harris, and Darrell Plogger will serve as assistant referee. The event is open to all fire departments and rescue squads in Rockbridge County.

Each department is allowed up to two teams. Each team will consist of four firefighters or rescue squad members. Firefighters are to compete in firefighter coats, pants and boots. The contest will be single elimination with the winning team being awarded a $250 donation plus the right to hold the Devin Riley Memorial Trophy for the coming year and have their department plaque added to the trophy.

Last year, the Goshen Fire Department was the winner of the trophy named in honor of the late Devin Riley, a member of the Goshen Fire Department, who was killed in a car accident shortly before graduation from high school.

The Firefighters Challenge is endorsed and supported by Rockbridge County through the administration of Chief Nathan Ramsey of the Rockbridge County Fire and Rescue and the Rockbridge Breakfast Club.

People are invited to contact their local fire department and rescue squad to see if they will be competing in the challenge and are encouraged to organize cheering squads to cheer on their area team.
