One mobile unit at Lexington High School was completely destroyed and two others were damaged in what investigators determined to be an act of arson. - Local residents packed the circuit courtroom to debate the proposed county rezoning of the old airport for the new Kennametal plant. Sentiment for and against the rezoning appeared to be evenly divided. -F.W. Kling Jr. Elementary School was chosen as the name for the new elementary school in Buena Vista. Kling’s name received 70 percent of the votes cast by Buena Vista residents in a poll conducted by the school board.

Charles W. Barger III delivered the 2004 commencement address for the Virginia Tech department of economics. -An employee at Valley Cinemas confessed to stealing a copy of the film “The Passion of the Christ” and then trying to sell it on eBay for $5,000. - Pete Robey, one of Buena Vista’s most wellknown citizens, died at the age of 63 after a long illness.
