Gifts Of Nature Will Be Missed

May 24, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: Like a sanctuary, Brushy Hills Preserve is a place where people are free to experience the healing power of nature.

No person planted all those fragile orchids someone dug up and stole during the flagged Wild Flower Walk a few weeks ago. They are rare gifts that grow naturally where conditions are right, according to the plan of the “Chief Master Gardener.”

A small group of people work hard to keep nonnative invasive plants from crowding out these and many other special native plants. They build and maintain trails so all people can safely walk and bike in peace and beauty.

A couple of selfless experts stake out this educational walk each year for our delight. It is devastating that a person, most likely a local resident motivated by greed and ignorance, stole these beautiful gifts of nature. We will miss them probably for years to come. KATIE McNEIL
