The Parry McCluer High School girls tennis team concluded the team portion of its season with a 5-2 home loss to Grayson County on Monday of last week at the Southern Virginia University courts in Buena Vista.
With the loss, the Fighting Blues finished with an overall record of 9-5, going 4-2 in the Pioneer District. The district tournament was canceled due to rain, but the Blues finished second to Bath County after splitting a pair of regular-season matches with the Chargers before falling to Bath in the first-place match on May 8.
Reviewing the match against Grayson County, second-year PM head coach Alyssa Sewell said she was especially proud of junior Peira Conner and freshman Keely Mahaffey for teaming up at No. 2 doubles team for working hard to capture a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lucy Kate Cherry and Kaydence Boykin.
“Excellent work by our No. 2 doubles team, who remained strong through the match,” said Sewell.
Mahaffey also won in singles. Sewell said she “overcame adversity” in her 6-3, 6-3 victory over Brooklyn Hill at No. 5 singles.
PM senior Addisen Roberts, the Pioneer District singles champion, was scheduled to compete in the Region 1C singles tournament on Monday at Auburn. She was then scheduled to team up with junior Macy Shafer in the Region 1C doubles tournament yesterday, also at Auburn.
