The VMI Community Theatre will hold auditions for its summer show, “The Foreigner,” Monday through Thursday of next week, June 3-6, at 7:30 p.m. in Gillis Theater located in Marshall Hall on post.
Cadets and community members may audition any of the four evenings. Five adult male and two adult female roles will be cast, plus a few minor parts without lines who appear at the end of the play. Those interested in auditioning should come prepared to cold-read from the provided script. Stage crew members are also needed. No experience is necessary for either actors or stage crew.
The play, written by Larry Shue, is a two-act comedy. The story takes place in a fishing lodge in rural Tilghman County, Georgia, where two Englishmen, Froggy and Charlie, arrive as guests.
The shy Charlie agreed to accompany Froggy on the trip after his sick wife begged him to go. When people at the lodge try to talk to Charlie, however, he remains silent. He is terribly shy, depressed about his wife’s illness, and cannot find the words to reply.
Froggy claims that Charlie cannot talk because he is a foreigner from an exotic country, and does not understand English. Taking the explanation as fact, the lodge’s guests quickly begin revealing their secrets, and Charlie soon discovers scandals amongst some of the residents of the lodge.
Performances of “The Foreigner” are scheduled for Friday, July 26, through Sunday, July 28. Rehearsals will be held Monday through Thursday evenings 7:45 through 9 beginning June 10.
