The community is invited to a potluck dinner and program on “Rockbridge Baths in the 1940s and 1950s” at the Rockbridge Baths Volunteer Fire Department on Sunday, June 9, starting at 12:30 p.m.
Chicken will be provided; attendees are asked to bring sides, salads,, or desserts to share.
The program will begin with a presentation by a panel made up of Johnny Harlow, Margaret McDonald, Malcolm Brownlee, Lib Chittum, Mary Margaret Logan, and Michael Snider. All of the panelists lived in or near Rockbridge Baths in the 1940s and 1950s and will share their memories of that time.
Members of the audience will also be encouraged to share memories of the Baths in the middle of the 20th century. Persons who have pictures and other memorabilia from that time are invited to bring them for display.
In the 1940s Rockbridge Baths had an elementary school, a Nutrition Camp, a mill, five general stores, a girls camp, and the remnants of an African-American community. “All of these are gone, but they live in the memories of persons who will tell you about them if you come on June 9,” said a spokesman.
This is the third of series of programs on the history of Rockbridge Baths, which ere sponsored by the Rockbridge Baths Community Organization. Previous programs in the series were led by Ben Nicely and Bernard Bangley.
