The Wildcats (16-1) advanced to the state semifinal round for the fourth consecutive year after winning a 13-12 overtime thriller over Powhatan in the quarterfinals at home on Friday. Lola Mulitalo scored the game-tying goal with 11 seconds left in regulation and then bagged the winner on a free-position shot in OT.

The Hawks (14-2) beat RC's Region 4D rival Blacksburg 7-4 in their state quarterfinal matchup in Mechanicsville. Hanover has also captured a narrow postseason win against Powhatan, beating the Indians 14-13 in the Region 4A title game after falling 15-7 to the same squad back in March. The Hawks' only other defeat this season was an 11-10 setback to Class 5 program Mills E. Godwin on May 8.

RC, which defeated Blacksburg 24-6 on May 24 to capture its fourth straight regional title, has won 15 consecutive games entering the semifinal. The only blemish on the Wildcats' resume this spring was a 15-7 loss to defending Class 4 state champion Western Albemarle on the road on March 19.

Western will compete in the other state semifinal matchup, taking on fellow Region 4B school Meridian in Crozet. The two semifinal winners are slated to meet in the state championship game at Charlottesville High School on Saturday.
