Teen Dies After Accident

PM Student ‘Brought Joy, Laughter’

A Parry McCluer High School student died last week after being struck by a car while riding his bike.

The accident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. last Wednesday, at the intersection of East 39th Street and Catalpa Avenue.

According to a statement from the Buena Vista Police Department, Lucas Smith, 16, and another juvenile were riding north on Catlapa and the car was driving south.

According to witnesses, Smith turned onto East 39th Street in front of the car and was not seen by the driver. After the accident, the driver moved their vehicle to a nearby parking lot and waited for police and was cooperative with the investigation. Smith was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he died from his injuries the next morning.

The principal of PMHS, Dr. Todd Jones, and the district superintendent, Dr. Tony Francis, both issued statements to students, parents and staff last Thursday, which was the last day of school for the division.

Jones said students could be picked up early that day and that counselors were available in case students or teachers needed them. He also noted that Rockbridge Area Community Services is also available for counseling and could be reached at (540) 463-3113.

Francis, in his statement, said that Smith “was not just a student; he was a cherished member of our school family.

“His presence brought joy, laughter, and kindness to those around him, and he will be profoundly missed by all who knew him,” he said. “He had a unique way of touching the lives of everyone he encountered, leaving a lasting impact that will be remembered fondly by classmates, teachers, and staff alike. Let us remember Lucas for the light he brought into our lives and the positive impact he had on our school. May his spirit live on in our memories and may we find solace in the cherished moments we shared with him.”

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, June 8, at 2 p.m. the Stone Church of the Brethren in Buena Vista. A visitation will be held an hour before the service at the church.
