Bike Va. Stopping In Glasgow

By Carolyn Bradley

Bike Virginia will be making a stop in Glasgow on June 23.

The announcement by interim Town Manager Jon Ellestad was among the items noted during the May Town Council meeting.

Ellestad said Bike Virginia will stop in Glasgow between 8 and 11 that Sunday morning. The town staff plans to set up a water and rest break for them at Locher Field.

It was also reported that plans are falling in place for the upcoming Rockin’ The Gorge music event scheduled for June 15 at 6 p.m. at Locher Pavilion.

Farmers’ market manager Carolyn Bradley said the Spring Vendor Event was a big success with 22 vendors. The regular market season began the weekend of May 3-4.

In the public works report, it was noted the mowing season is well underway. There were issues with the sewer line at 124 and 210 Catawba St. Rocks and sticks were found in the line and cleared out.

The stand for the bateau river boat has been built and the bateau from Lexington will be moved to Glasgow in the near future.

The Planning Commission recommended revolving appointments of Commission members to ensure compliance with Virginia State Code. The Commission will also reapply for the Community Development Grant through the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission, which was originally applied for and obtained in 2020/2021. The grant will allow Council to move forward with the Comprehensive Plan goals and strategies for town beautification and improvements. They will also initiate a review and revision of the current town zoning ordinances.

The position of administrative assistant is vacant and is being advertised in the paper and on the Indeed website.

The due diligence period for the sale of the “triangle” property to Dollar General (JMB Acquisitions) has expired. This means that the contract is in effect and the property has been legally sold. The closing date was scheduled to take place by May 25.

Ellestad also presented the proposed budget for 2024/25 to Council. Council was to have a special work session to consider the budget. A public hearing will take place at the regular business meeting on June 11.
