A petition was filed by attorney Bernard Natkin in Rockbridge Circuit Court to place a “liquor by the drink” proposal on the ballot in the fall. This would allow Lexington restaurants to serve mixed drinks. - Three hundred nine-four students graduated from Washington and Lee University. Author and W&L alumnus Tom Wolfe was presented with an honorary doctor of letters degree. - After learning that its religious education program was in violation of the U.S. Constitution, the Rockbridge County School Board suspended the program for the next year.

When asked what the financial impact would be if the golf course did not open in 2004 as planned, Buena Vista City Manager Scott Dadson replied, “Not good.” -“Stonewall Country” opened for its final run at Lime Kiln Theater. The musical had been a fan favorite for 20 years. - Café Michel opened on North Lee Highway. For years chef Michel Galand had run a popular French restaurant in Clifton Forge that was frequented by Lexingtonians so he brought the restaurant closer to its core clientele.
