Postseason Honors Accorded To Local Athletes

Eleven Parry McCluer High School softball players received all-district honors last week, while eight Rockbridge County High School girls lacrosse players were awarded all-region honors.

For PM, senior shortstop Payton Emore was named Pioneer District player of the year and was selected to the all-district first team. Joining her on the first team were senior catcher Autumn Mundy, junior center fielder Logan Vest and junior pitcher Olivia Julian. Last month, Emore, PM’s female athlete of the year, signed her national letter of intent to continue her academic and softball career at Bryant & Stratton College, a junior college in Virginia Beach, and Mundy later committed to join her on the team.

Six Fighting Blues were named to the alldistrict second team: senior flex/designated player Gracey Shafer, junior pitcher Alysa Wheeler, junior left fielder Natalie Mohler, junior third baseman Victoria Hamilton, sophomore second baseman Kadence Zollman and freshman outfielder and second baseman Kendall Painter. Sophomore right fielder Ally Cullen was named honorable mention.

Under the direction of 10th-year head coach Troy Clark, the Blues went 9-9 overall, going 6-1 in the Pioneer District to win the district regular-season title. The Blues, who had beaten Eastern Montgomery 8-3 in the first-place game to determine the regular- season district champion, lost to Eastern Montgomery 9-7 in the Pioneer District finals before concluding their season with a 10-1 loss to Giles in the Region 1C quarterfinals.

For the RC girls lacrosse team, sophomore attacker Lola Mulitalo was named Region 4D player of the year and was selected to the all-region first team. Mulitalo notched her 100th career point in early April.

Joining Mulitalo on the all-region first team were senior attacker Nala Shearer, senior defender and midfielder Libba Erskine and freshman midfielder Anna Nye. During the Region 4D quarterfinals on May 18, a 20-3 win over Jefferson Forest, Shearer dished out her 100th career assist and scored her 200th career points. In April, Shearer signed her letter of intent to play Division III volleyball at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. Last November, Libba Erskine signed her letter of intent to play Division II lacrosse for Florida Southern College. Nye recorded her 100th career draw control last month.

Four Wildcats were named to the all-region second team: senior midfielder Maddie Dahl, senior attacker and defender Halina Homiak, sophomore defender Nadia Gaydos and freshman attacker Ruby Goodhart. Dahl, who recorded her 200th career draw control in April, signed her letter of intent in April to play Division III lacrosse and volleyball for Berry College in Georgia. The same day, Homiak signed her letter of intent to play Division III lacrosse at Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania.

Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Susan Nye, the Wildcats won their fourth consecutive Region 4D title, defeating Blacksburg 24-6 in the regional championship game on May 24 in Lexington to improve to 15-1.
