The old Lexington Gazette building on Jefferson Street was damaged in an early morning fire. - The famous Charles Willson Peale painting of George Washington belonging to Washington and Lee University went on display at the National Portrait Gallery. - Plans were being made to celebrate the 100th birthday of Glasgow resident Angie Mitchell, the granddaughter of an enslaved woman who also lived to her 100s.

Jeri Schaff, who had been the executive director of the United Way of Lexington-Rockbridge County for 10 years, announced she was leaving to take over the leadership of the Maury River Senior Center. - Two hundred eighteen diplomas were handed out at Rockbridge County High School’s graduation ceremony at Cameron Hall. Eighty-one diplomas were conferred upon graduating seniors at Parry McCluer High School’s ceremony, also held at Cameron Hall. - The Jackson House, the former home of Confederate Gen. Thomas J. Jackson, reopened to visitors after extensive renovations and structural repairs.
