Collierstown

Deborah Potter McCormick, 540-463-7652

Approximately 100 children and adults attended the opening of “Mystery Island” Vacation Bible School on Sunday, June 9, at the Palmer Community Center. The community’s churches are hosting this year’s VBS nightly from 5:45 to 8 p.m. through Friday, June 14. Classes are available for all ages and adults. Supper will be provided nightly. Families and area residents are invited to come and enjoy Bible study, crafts, recreation and fellowship with friends and neighbors. VBS participants are conducting a penny challenge to secure canned foods for Helping Hands, the food ministry of the Fairfield Presbyterian Church serving families in the Fairfield area. Area residents interested in donating canned food to this effort may bring donations to the Palmer Center or leave them with one of the sponsoring churches. Those churches include Union View Advent Christian Church, Collierstown Baptist, Collierstown Presbyterian, Collierstown United Methodist, Oxford Presbyterian, the Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church and the Rapps Mill Church.

On Sunday, June 30, the 11 a.m. worship service at the Collierstown United Methodist Church will be led by the laity. Following the service a covered-dish luncheon honoring the Rev. and Mrs. Bill Bearden will be held. The Rev. Bearden is retiring as the pastor of the Collierstown United Methodist Charge where he has faithfully served as minister to the Collierstown and Mt. Horeb congregations and the surrounding communities.

The Effinger Volunteer Fire Department’s annual raffle fundraiser is underway. The raffle will have drawings for 26 prizes on Saturday, July 27. This year’s top prize is $5,000 cash. Books of 12 tickets cost $12, six tickets are $5, and the cost of a single ticket is $1. To purchase raffle tickets, contact any fire department member or call (540) 463-1933.
