Patterson Named BV Teacher Of The Year

Martin, Davis, Jolly Also Recognized

The Buena Vista School Board recognized Angie Patterson as the division’s Teacher of the Year at its May meeting.

Patterson, an Amherst County native, studied at Radford University and James Madison University before joining Buena Vista City Public Schools in 1992.

Since then, she has been able to experience much of the division, teaching kindergarten and second grade, and taking on roles with fourth through 12th grades. Currently, Patterson teaches sixth and seventh grade science at Parry McCluer Middle School.

Patterson retired at the end of the 2023-2024 school year, leaving with 32 years of teaching experience.

- Each of the division’s four schools also had a Teacher of the Year.

From Kling Elementary, Madison Martin was recognized.

Martin graduated from Patrick Henry Community College and Liberty University, studying early childhood education.

She has been in the Buena Vista school system for three years, working with the Virginia Preschool Initiative.

Enderly Height’s Teacher of the Year was Lisa Davis.

A product of the Buena Vista school system, Davis graduated from Parry McCluer High School and Bridgewater College, where she studied psychology, elementary education and social work.

Davis began teaching in Buena Vista in 2000, first at kindergarten level, then moving to first and second grade. Currently, Davis is teaching second grade at Enderly.

Angie Patterson was also recognized as Parry McCluer Middle School’s Teacher of the Year.

For Parry McCluer High School, Janet Jolly was named Teacher of the Year.

Jolly began her career as a pediatric nurse, but returned to school at Southern Virginia University, graduating in 2011 with a degree in early childhood education.

In Buena Vista, she started out at Enderly Elementary, but now works in special education at the high school. - Throughout the year, the School Board recognized a senior and an employee of the month at its regular meetings.

In September, the Senior of the Month was Kovyk Chandler, and the Employee of the Month was Jeremiah Brokenbrough.

In October, the Senior of the Month was Landon Catlett, and the Employee of the Month was Jeni Osorio.

In November, the Senior of the Month was Savannah Lewis, and the Employee of the Month was Angie Patterson.

In December, the Senior of the Month was Sydney Mahaffey, and the Employee of the Month was Harry Shaffer.

The Senior of the Month for January was Leyla Guevara, and the Employee of the Month was Mike Gibson.

In February, the Senior of the Month was JJ Jones, and the Employee of the Month was Tillie Conner.

The Senior of the Month for March was Addisen Roberts, and the Employee of the Month was JoBeth Broughman-Hostetter.

In April, the Senior of the Month was Evan Cook, and the Employee of the Month was Sandra Mohler.

In May, the Senior of the Month was Tanner Coleman, and for June it was Alexys Tobias.
