The Brownsburg Community Association awarded three $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors this year, thanks in part to a significant donation from Bruce and Margaret Alexander and with the support from donations by VCL Flying Horse Farm and Mike Strickler.
The BCA board of directors had a difficult time choosing winners from the 23 applicants who submitted essays, said a spokesman. This year the students were asked to submit an essay addressing the following question: “What is the meaning of community to you, and how will community be a part of your future in your post high school education?”
The BCA board of directors decided last year to award a scholarship annually in memory of Dick Barnes. The winner of the first Dick Barnes Memorial Scholarship is Micah Mayr from Rockbridge County High School. He plans to attend a four-year university in Virginia to study business management or marketing, with a minor in outdoor recreation and management.
The other two scholarship winners were also from Rockbridge County High School. Hallie Darmante was awarded a BCA scholarship in honor of Isabelle Chewning. She plans to major in film studies and communication at Randolph College and wants to pursue a career in broadcast journalism and/or as a professional announcer.
The third scholarship was awarded to Madi Poulsen. She will be attending Utah State University in the fall studying business marketing.
