Remziye Erdogan Wessel, a student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia, is one of 100 doctoral students within the U.S. and Canada selected to receive a $25,000 P.E.O. Scholar Award from the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was nominated by P.E.O. Chapter BG of Lexington.
The P.E.O. Scholar Awards program, established in 1991, provides substantial meritbased awards for women of the U.S. and Canada who are pursuing a doctoral-level degree at an accredited college or university.
Erdogan, born in Spencerport, N.Y., is a 2020 summa cum laude graduate of Lafayette College.
Erdogan’s research focuses on maternal prenatal immunization to boost disease specific antibody transfer to the fetus via the placenta. Her research uses an innovative approach to determine the optimal prenatal vaccine regimens to promote better outcomes of all newborns, especially premature babies.
Chapter BG has been a part of the Lexington community since it was organized in 1993. P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) has been celebrating women helping women “reach for the stars” for more than 155 years. Since its inception in 1869, the nonprofit organization has helped more than 125,000 women pursue educational goals by providing approximately $432 million in grants, scholarships, awards and loans.
