Looking At Trump And The Military

June 20, 2024

Editor, The News-Gazette: On January 6, 2021, all of us directly witnessed former president Trump committing treason-- showing himself to be a traitor to our democracy.

Nonetheless and unbelievably, even with this greatest of betrayals, there are many in our country still supporting him to again be our president, even some in our now total volunteer military.

Those serving have additional reasons to reject him for his mocking of their patriotism. He questions, why anyone would voluntarily join the military, asking what’s in it for them, repeatedly disparaging their intelligence, especially those who had been wounded or killed, calling them “suckers and losers.” He claims that hero John McCain was a “[expletive] loser” because he bravely endured five years in a Vietnamese prison. He asked that wounded veterans be kept out of military parades. He questions why we sided with the allies in the world wars. He has even suggested that Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley deserves to be executed.

He admires Putin, Xi, Un and other totalitarian leaders, openly admitting to wanting to be a dictator himself. He has adopted some of Hitler’s phrasing. He talks about a blood bath if he loses this election.

He is responsible for aid being held back from our ally Ukraine in their time of great need - apparently as an appeasement to Putin. He threatens to pull us out of NATO, increasing the possibility of us facing a war with China. Is this really the person our military wants to be commander in chief? High-ranking military leaders like Milley, Kelly, Matis, McMasters, Petraeus, all who know Trump well, warn us that he is unfit for office. As I see it, a military man supporting Trump is betraying himself and his pledge to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic.

If we play by Trump’s rules, Biden will definitely win reelection, since it is up to Vice President Harris to decide to do “the right thing” and to determine which electoral votes to accept as valid. Moreover, if the court decides that a sitting president has absolute immunity, then Biden has some very interesting options.

Let’s hope that reality, truth, facts, evidence, and honesty prevail. DENNIS GREYWALL Lexington
