Field Set For Fall Elections In Area

Lexington will have contested races for City Council and the School Board this fall.

Candidates who met the filing deadline last Tuesday, June 18, for three seats on City Council are incumbents Marilyn Alexander and Leslie Straughan as well as John Driscoll and Madeleine Robinson.

In the city’s inaugural School Board elections, four candidates vying for three seats are incumbent Tammy Dunn and Meghan Ferguson, Katie Massey and Kasey Potter.

Lexington Mayor Frank Friedman is unopposed for re-election.

In Goshen, three candidates have qualified to run for two seats on Town Council. They are Sheila L. Sampson, Jeffrey Hunter Shaffer and incumbent Stephen Bickley.

Glasgow Town Council incumbents Marcie Hill, Brandall Branch and Natalie Harris have all qualified for inclusion on the ballot and have no opposition. - Rockbridge area Republican U.S. Senate primary results were reflective of statewide results, with retired U.S. Navy Capt. Hung Cao winning by a comfortable margin to become the GOP nominee to challenge Democratic incumbent U.S. Tim Kaine this fall. Local results were as follows: Rockbridge County – Cao, 754; Edward C. “Eddie” Garcia Jr., 64; Jonathan W. Emord, 76; C.L. “Chuck Smith, 107; Scott Thomas Parkinson, 111.

Lexington – Cao, 83; Garcia, 10; Emord, 10; Smith, 15; Parkinson, 16.

Buena Vista – Cao, 92; Garcia, 10; Emord, 17; Smith, 10; Parkinson, 16.

Voter turnout was light in all three localities. In the county, 6.76 percent of eligible voters cast ballots; voter turnout in Buena Vista was 3.26 percent and in Lexington it was 3.19 percent.
