June 26, 1974

Monty Potter and Allen E. Strecker, two 4-H members from Rockbridge County, were awarded trips to the 4-H Congress for outstanding citizenship and leadership. - Lucille Joyce of Lexington was named the new registrar for Lexington, succeeding W.R. Hullinger.

- Roy Smith, superintendent of public works for the city of Lexington, retired after 39 years. Lexington City Council voted to name the newly developed Varnar Lane parking lot in honor of him.

Carilion Health System began managing Stonewall Jackson Hospital on a 60-day trial basis as the hospital board explored future management options.

- More than 100 supporters of a bill that would prohibit the slaughter of American horses for human consumption abroad packed a town meeting with 6th District Rep. Bob Goodlatte. The Congressman, chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, opposed the bill, saying that horse abuse would increase if slaughter were not an option.

- John Whitesell retired after 32 years in education.
