Without Rule Of Law, ‘We Are Just Another Dictatorship’

June 24, 2024

Editor, The News-Gazette: Recently, one of your writers wrote a letter in regards to the lack of “fairness” in the recent Trump trial. This is yet again, one more effort by MAGAs to spread suspicion and mistrust of our justice system.

Our justice system is still one of the best and most effective in the world. What many people fail to realize is that before any of the criminal trials in which Trump is currently involved go to trial, all the evidence is reviewed by an impartial grand jury. These juries are made up of a cross section of our “peers.” They come from all walks of life, financial backgrounds and political persuasions. In my past service of jury duty, I was the foreperson for one of those grand juries here in Lexington and experienced the process first hand.

These grand juries review all the evidence provided. The jury members must decide if there is enough evidence pertaining to guilt to warrant a trial in the first place. If they decide the evidence is strong enough to warrant a trial, then the process moves forward and a trial is scheduled. This trial is as beneficial to the person suspected as it is to the prosecution. It means the person gets a fair chance to defend himself- in spite of the overwhelming evidence against him.

All of those Republican Congresspeople who showed up as Trump’s lackeys in his trial in New York were an embarrassment to a once honorable party-who in the era of Nixon and Watergate had the courage to support a justice system against a corrupt president. Today’s MAGA Republicans have dirtied themselves in the gutters of political ambition and power. They don’t know the meaning of the word “integrity.”

Without our justice system and the rule of law, we are indeed just another Russia/dictatorship. BETH HOUSER Lexington
