Glasgow

Wow, the temps lately have been hotter than a firecracker on the Fourth of July! My yard is turning into a dust bowl. Walking barefooted in the grass is like walking on tiny needles. Worse, my heart goes out to those with gardens, especially if they are unable to water daily. The power grid is probably overworked from all the electrical pull on the system from air-conditioners. And those with wells, I pray your water supply is sufficient.

The air-conditioner on my car went out last Monday and it was windows down, wind blowing for a few days. My son’s friend came to the rescue one evening and fixed my air-conditioner. So thankful; he was my hero.

Last Friday at the Farmers Market was a good day. We had several vendors, including produce and prepared foods, and about 35 folks stopped by to take advantage of it all. Praying more local gardeners will soon be able to bring those homegrown veggies. Support your local farmers market. They are open Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Have you checked out Blue Ridge Deli and Meats yet? They are located at 1476 Wert Faulkner Highway, Natural Bridge Station, in the former Milk Bar location, for those of us old enough to remember that from days gone by. They are down the street from the Natural Bridge Elementary School. This writer had to the opportunity this past weekend to stop in for one of their fresh ground hamburgers. Neat clean place, friendly staff, delicious foods and reasonable prices. Like them on Facebook.

St John’s Episcopal Church was the location for a gathering last Sunday afternoon to honor Martha Ramer, retired elementary teacher and longtime resident of Glasgow, whose daughter, Marty Ramer, passed recently. She will be moving to the Williamsburg area in the near future to be near relatives there where she is originally from. The Ramers and my family have been friends for 50plus years, having served on the fire department and auxiliary together. My husband and I stayed with Martha and Ted for a few weeks following the 1969 flood. Years later I babysat with Marty before she started school. Martha would drop off Marty and take our son, Mike, to school with her. We enjoyed some summer days around their pool. She would pass down Marty’s outgrown clothes to our daughter, until she grew bigger than Marty. I have many fond memories of our friends the Ramers over the years. Godspeed Martha, we will miss you.

Happy Fourth of July to everyone. Keep cool, safe travels.
