July 3, 1974

Mrs. Courtney Baker was appointed Lexington’s commissioner of revenue. And Mrs. Patricia DeLaney was named city treasurer. -A prayer and memorial service for Mrs. Martin Luther King was held at Randolph Street United Methodist Church. Mrs. King and a deacon were shot and killed at a church in Atlanta, Ga. Mrs. King was the mother of slain Civil Rights leader the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. - After hosting the WREL morning show for 14 years, E.F. “Skip” Houff parted ways with the radio station saying “I just thought a change of pace was in order” and “I’m not a morning person, really.”

“Stonewall Country” ended its 20-year run at Lime Kiln Theater. The musical was written by Don Baker, in collaboration with Robin and Linda Williams, and all three were present for the final performance. - Virginia’s Farm Service Agency began administering federal loans via the internet. - Gordon Saunders took the oath of office as general district court judge, succeeding Judge Joseph Hess who retired June 30.
