Reader Sees ‘Silver Lining’ In Heat Wave

June 26, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: People have been fussing about the heat wave that we’ve been having, but I consider it a blessing.

Why? I don’t have to worry about cold weather, ice, sleet and snow right now, or whether my furnace will give out during a 16°F night. A foot of snow can make it terribly hard to get out of a country lane, or around on paved roads, even with the highway department trucks working 24/7.

I’m also glad the weather is sunny and dry. Now, I’m not lighting any brush or trash fires, but there’s almost a zero chance of flooding, unlike in some other parts of the United States right now.

Even though I don’t have airconditioning at home, I’m thankful that I have air-conditioned cars, places to work in, and libraries and stores to go to. So, there’s always a flip side, a silver lining, to something even as quotidian as the weather: in my opinion, when it’s hot outside, I can always find a place to cool off, but when it’s cold outdoors, it’s awfully hard to get warm.
