The Washington and Lee University women’s and men’s swimming teams both won Old Dominion Athletic Conference titles last week at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.

In the four-day meet that ended on Saturday, the 24th-ranked W&L women clinched their second straight ODAC title and 15th league title in the last 16 years, and the W&L men won their second straight ODAC title.

The W&L women scored 930 points to beat runnerup Roanoke (535.5 points), while Lynchburg (516.5) placed third of 10 teams. The W&L men tallied 964 points, Lynchburg (606) placed second of eight teams, and Roanoke College (542) finished third.

Generals Grapple To ODAC Crown

The W&L wrestling team captured the first ODAC Wrestling Tournament team title since the league renewed the sport sponsorship on Saturday at Shenandoah University.

W&L won with 135.5 points, while Averett (122) placed second of seven teams, and Roanoke College (117) finished third.

Out of the 70 wrestlers competing for the 10 titles at each of the NCAA weight classes, the Generals had seven wrestlers work their way into the championship session, two into the third place matches and one in a fifth place bout at the tournament.

W&L, Roanoke College, and Averett University finished the regular season with an ODAC dual record of 5-1 to be named tri-champions of the first ODAC Wrestling Championships since 1980. However, the Generals dominated the mats at Shenandoah University to claim three individual titles and the team tournament bragging rights.

The Generals won the ODAC title in 1977, 1978 and 1979 before the league suspended sponsorship of the sport due to low institution participation numbers. The 2023 title is the program’s fourth ODAC Conference team championship, 14th team championship overall and third consecutive title for W&L after winning back-to-back Centennial Conference trophies in 2020 and 2022 (the 2021 season was canceled due to the COVID pandemic).

W&L’s Riley Parker (125-pounds), Ryan Luth (157) and Matt Majoy (285) all claimed their respective weight classes and Luth was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler after he tallied up 18.5 team points from a technical fall, pin and major decision win.

David Rubin (133), Evan Lindner (141), Mark Troni (174) and John Ryan Sedovy (197), a 2020 Rockbridge County High School graduate, all placed second in their weight classes.

The Generals will compete at the Southeast Futures Invite in Salem on Sunday. Next up will be the NCAA Division III Southeast Regional Feb. 24-25, with the location to be announced.
