Five-hundred people attended this year’s Souper Bowl, a fundraiser for Washington and Lee University’s Campus Kitchen Backpack Program, which provides nonperishable food for needy children. Fourteen area restaurants, caterers and community organizations served up 19 soups to the crowd and $9,700 was raised.

Both the attendance and the amount raised were significantly higher than the past two years when the event operated with COVID-19 restrictions in place, according to Ryan Brink, Campus Kitchen coordinator.

Providing musical entertainment this year were the female acapella group Jubilee and student bands 3 Cooks 1 Kitchen and Meatpuzzle.

The soup makers were Campus Kitchen at W&L, CHEFs Catering, Glowbowl Café, Heliotrope Brewery, LexVegas Bistro, LexMex Tacos, Napa Thai, Pronto, Pure Eats, Rockbridge Jewish Community, Southern Inn, Sweet Treats, The Georges and W&L Dining.

This year’s event was sponsored by CAPTRUST and Full Circle Catering.

“This year’s Souper Bowl was a fantastic event,” said Brink. “We would like to thank all of the restaurants, caterers and community organizations that make so many fantastic soups. It was great to be back in-person and we look forward to building on the excitement and energy from this event in future years!”
