Rockbridge County administrator Don Austin was pleased with the operation of the landfill on its first anniversary, but there were still problems with misuse as evidenced by the fact that someone dumped five dead cows there that had to be retrieved and properly buried.
- After a relatively good early season, Rockbridge County was hit by drought conditions as the year moved on to its second half. - Charles H. Lauck Jr. and Maj. Joseph Martin set world records for their age group in the 120-yard hurdles at the fourth annual Southeastern U.S. Masters Track and Field Championships in Raleigh, N.C.

Frank Friedman and Marylin Alexander were reelected chairman and vice chairman, respectively, by their colleagues on the Lexington School Board. - David Miller replaced Kathy Burant as athletic director for Rockbridge County High School, the sixth since RCHS opened its doors in 1992. - Rockbridge native John Alexander was named new principal at Fairfield Elementary School succeeding John Whitesell who retired June 30.
