VMI, W&L Top Rated By Magazine

Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University have both been rated 5 stars in Money magazine’s Best Colleges in America list for 2024.

This rating considers quality of education, based on factors such as graduation rates and student-to-faculty ratio, as well as affordability and student outcomes.

Starting with a new system last year, Money assigns colleges a rating on a five-star scale, with five stars being the best. To receive a five-star rating, a college must “score exceptionally high on most of our metrics,” according to the magazine.

VMI has an acceptance rate of 71%, and a graduation rate of 85%.

According to Money magazine, 69% of incoming freshman receive grants, while overall, 54% of students receive need-based grants and 18% receive merit-based grants. Average early career earnings are estimated to be around $77,000.

In 2023, VMI was scored at a 4.5 on this scale. Previously, Money magazine had a numbered ranking, and VMI came in at No. 5 overall out of the more than 620 colleges ranked on Money magazine’s 2022 Best Colleges in America list. -In its profile of Washington and Lee University, Money magazine noted that the acceptance rate is 17%, while the graduation rate is 93%.

The majority of incoming freshmen, 61%, receive some type of grant, and Money magazine notes that the university has pledged to meet all demonstrated financial need for students.

Typical early career earnings for W&L graduates are estimated at around $84,000.

Last year, W&L received a 4.5-star rating from the magazine.
