On Sunday, July 7, Burr Datz was the guest speaker at the 11 a.m. worship service of the Collierstown Presbyterian Church. He accompanied Riley Potter on the guitar as she offered a vocal solo as the morning anthem. The worship service also included the observance of the sacrament of communion led by Elder Joan Potter. The Christian Education Committee provided lemonade on the church’s front lawn and a time of fellowship at the close of the service.
The Collierstown Presbyterian Women kicked off their annual “School Bag” campaign prior to the worship hour on Sunday, July 7. Canvas tote bags made and donated by Louise Tardy were available with lists of supplies to be purchased and placed in each bag. Filled bags are to be returned to the church by Aug. 11 for distribution by Church World Service in the United States and abroad. The church community is invited to participate in this effort and can obtain bags and information by calling the church office (540) 463-5918. Financial donations for the purchase of supplies to fill the bags may also be given. Those wishing to make a financial gift to the School Bag campaign should designate the gift for school bags and mail it to Collierstown Presbyterian Church, 31 Church Drive, Lexington, VA 24450. This year’s goal is to prepare 260 school bags for needy students. Your help is needed to provide every student with the needed supplies when the new school year begins.
The congregations of the Collierstown United Methodist Charge welcomed new minister, the Rev. Daniel Montague and his wife, Angela, at a reception held at the Mt. Horeb Church following the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday, July 7. A time of fellowship with the Montagues was enjoyed by members of the Collierstown and Mt. Horeb congregations and community residents.
Providing leadership for the July worship services held at the Lake Robertson Campground will be the Collierstown United Methodist Charge. Area residents are invited to join Lake Robertson campers at 9 a.m. on Sunday mornings at the campground chapel for worship outdoors.
The Effinger Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank the patrons of its Fourth of July barbecue chicken sales held at the Buchanan carnival. The department’s next chicken sale will be held Saturday, July 27, at the Effinger Fire Department building beginning at noon. Chicken halves and whole dinners will be available for purchase. A chicken dinner will include a half chicken, choice of two sides, a roll, applesauce and iced tea. Food items may be purchased as carryout but some seating for indoor dining will be available.
The drawing for the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department’s annual raffle fundraiser will be held on Saturday, July 27. This year’s raffle will have drawings for 26 prizes. The 2024 top prize is $5,000 cash. Books of 12 tickets cost $10, 6 tickets are $5, and the cost of a single ticket is $1. To purchase raffle tickets, contact any fire department member or call (540) 463-1933.
Plans for the 2025 Effinger Community Birthday Calendar prepared and sold by the Effinger Ruritan Club have been made. The cost of the calendar is $4. Birthday, anniversary, and memorial listings are 35 cents each. Calendars and listings may be purchased by contacting a Ruritan Club member.
