Area Youth Helps Her Furever Friends

A Buena Vista girl decided to carry out the notion that it’s better to give than receive, even on her birthday.

On her 11th birthday, Gwen Tally organized a fundraiser for Furever Friends. She and a couple of friends held a bake sale and donated the proceeds, $280, to the Buena Vista-based cat rescue organization.

“These days everyone complains about our youth,” said Mary Huffman of Furever Friends. “Here’s one to cheer about. “Gwen is a very special young lady,” she continued. “She volunteers weekly,” along with either her mother or father, Erin and Steven.

The Tallys come to Furever Friends every week “to play with the cats and kittens, sometimes helping to clean their cages or cat towers, and to cheer them up!”

As for Gwen’s birthday fundraiser, Huffman remarked, “This sweet and caring young lady baked and set up and raised $280 for the kitties of Furever Friends! When so many would buy for themselves, with a big grin on her face and a smile in her heart, she gave so the cats and kittens can receive food and necessary supplies until they can be adopted into loving homes.”

Gwen was on the receiving end of a special birthday present. Her parents decided to let her keep a Furever Friend she’d been fostering, a black-and-white kitten named Bijou.

GWEN holds Bijou, a kitten her parents let her adopt on her birthday.
