Feb. 14, 1973

Historic Lexington Foundation was awarded a special grant of $12,500 through the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission from the U.S. Department of the Interior. The funds came at a time when HLF was involved in its third major restoration project, the Jacob M. Ruff House. - The White House notified 6th District Congressman M. Caldwell Butler that Buena Vista’s flood control project was included in the administration’s recommendations before Congress. - The Lexington School Board held a special open meeting to investigate an alleged disciplinary problem at Lylburn Downing School. This meeting was prompted after the school board received a letter raising concerns about student conduct.

“Gods and Generals” premiered in Virginia to an audience of about 400 people at Virginia Military Institute’s Jackson Memorial Hall. The Civil War movie, filmed in Lexington in Aug. 2001 and June 2002, was a prequel to “Gettysburg.” -An abundance of sleet and snow fell in the area over several days. In some parts of the county, there was as much as 9 inches of sleet on the ground. - The Lexington Downtown Development Association received a Virginia Main Street Milestone Award for excellence in the amount of private investment dollars and number of volunteer hours.
