July 17, 1974

Davis Motor Company became a Chrysler-Plymouth dealership operated by brothers John H. and R.K. Mast. - The Greenery, a boutique specializing in green plants and plant accessories, opened in the Old Main Street shopping mall. - John McDaniel, an assistant anthropology professor at Washington and Lee University, led a group of 15, including his wife, Nell Reeves, in an archaeological excavation at the site of the original Liberty Hall Academy.

Blasting began at the site of W&L’s new art and music academic building.

- Dave Wood, former general curator of the Mill Mountain Zoo in Roanoke, accepted a similar position with the Virginia Safari Park in Natural Bridge. Increases in the number of tourists visiting the park made it necessary to have a full-time curator. -A fire occurred at Mohawk Industries in Glasgow when a carpet that was being dried in an oven-type machine combusted.
