Lexington
Meeting Date Moved
Meetings of the Lexington School Board will be shifted from the first Tuesday of the month to the second Wednesday of the month, beginning in August of 2024 and continuing until July of 2025. They will continue to be held at the Lexington City School Board Office, 300 Diamond St., at 5:30 p.m.
Waddell Enrollment Still Rising
In an enrollment update at the July 9 meeting of the Lexington School Board, Superintendent Rebecca Walters said that numbers continue to rise.
“We’re sitting at about 336 elementary students. We are at full or beyond capacity at pretty much every grade level, except fourth grade,” she said.
At its June meeting, the Board voted to waitlist many nonresident applicants to reserve space for resident students moving into the Lexington, and who therefore are automatically accepted into the division.
Nonresidents applying to the school division are waitlisted at kindergarten, first, second, third, fifth, seventh, and eighth grades, and few spaces are expected to open up.
“In working with Ms. [Kimberly] Troise, we’re pretty much at the point now where we’re having to let the folks who are on the waitlist know that the likelihood of that waitlist moving is not looking great right now,” Walters said.
“Having over our cap at most grade levels, the space is just not there for additional folks to be approved at this time.”
Dunn, Shester To Lead Board
During its annual reorganization meeting last week, the Lexington School Board elected Tammy Dunn as board chair. Dunn has served as board since January of this year, following the previous chair’s departure from the School Board.
Katie Shester, recently reappointed to the Board by Lexington City Council, was elected as vice chair, and Stephanie Burch as board clerk.
The July 9 meeting was also the first for LaTonya Douglas, who was appointed to the Board in June.
Dismissal Time Set
Dismissal for all grade levels at Waddell Elementary School will be at 2:45 for the 2024-2025 school year. Superintendent Rebecca Walters informed the School Board of this shift at its July 9 meeting.
