Local Chess Teams Claim First In ACC

Members of the Lexington City Schools Chess Club participated in the ACC Championships in Roanoke on Saturday, Jan. 28. In the K-5 division, the team from Waddell won first place in a large field of six teams and 34 players. The team from LDMS won first place in the K-8 division.
Local Chess Teams Claim First In ACC

Members of the Lexington City Schools Chess Club participated in the ACC Championships in Roanoke on Saturday, Jan. 28. In the K-5 division, the team from Waddell won first place in a large field of six teams and 34 players. The team from LDMS won first place in the K-8 division.

The students’ individual performances were equally impressive. The team from LDMS had seven players place in the top 10, led by Jonathan Soriano Caceres, who won first place with a perfect score of four wins in four games. He was closely followed by Luke Drumbl, who earned second with 3.5 points, and Elliott Allen and Edison Rahl who finished in third and fourth, respectively. Rossel Soriano Caceres finished sixth, Dahlia Obiedat earned ninth, and Tim Simon landed in 10th.

Representing the team from Waddell in the K-5 division, Jhossel Soriano Caceres won the tournament with four wins; Harry Loughhead, Gibson Fox, and Theo Rahl each had three points and finished in fourth, eighth, and ninth place respectively. Jhostyn Soriano Caceres and Maryn Osbourne also played well, both earning at least 2 points.

In the Beginners division, Caleb Rodocker played terrifically in his first tournament, finishing in fourth place overall with three wins out of four.
