Traffic was backed up once again in the northern part of Rockbridge County following a tractor-trailer accident Sunday afternoon that injured its driver.
According to Nathan Ramsey, Rockbridge County fire-rescue chief, the accident occurred at mile marker 197 southbound on Interstate 81 at approximately 5:15 p.m.
The accident involved a single tractor-trailer that was lying on its side across the interstate when first responders arrived. The driver was transported to Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital and then flown to a Roanoke hospital.
Both southbound lanes of the interstate were closed until nearly 7 p.m. when one lane was reopened. The scene was finally cleared about 8:30 p.m.
Traffic was detoured off of Interstate 81 at Fairfield during the incident, leading to traffic congestion in Fairfield, besides the lengthy backup on the interstate.
Responding to the crash were South River Volunteer Fire Department, Fairfield Rescue Squad, Lexington Rescue and Rockbridge County Fire-Rescue.
