A chemical tank overturned on U.S. 60 and completely blocked the highway. The Lexington and Kerrs Creek volunteer fire departments were on the scene for 15 hours in case of a possible leak or spill of the caustic liquid. - Fred L. Hadsel, U.S. ambassador to Ghana and a career diplomat since 1946, was named director of the George C. Marshall Research Library. - Area farmers were worried about their crops as dry conditions continued in Rockbridge County. Some crops had already reached the point where rain couldn’t help them.

The Rockbridge Regional Fair opened at the Virginia Horse Center under cloudy skies. - Three teenage girls were taken to Stonewall Jackson Hospital and treated for injuries sustained when they were thrown from the Tilt-A-Whirl at the South River Volunteer Fire Department’s annual carnival.
- Buena Vista City Manager Scott Dadson announced that Rockbridge Global Village would be offering high-speed internet access to citizens and businesses in Buena Vista beginning in the early fall.
