Lexington City Council approved a conditional use permit application July 18 for a detached accessory dwelling unit, the first in the city since the approval of the ordinance allowing them earlier this year.
The application, filed by Tori and Joey Bates of 313 S. Jefferson St., is for the detached garage on their property, which contains an apartment. They plan to use the garage apartment as a short-term rental. The application was previously considered by the Lexington Planning Commission at its June 27 meeting, and the Commission recommended approval of the permit application with two conditions: that the size of the ADU “not be increased unless permitted by a revised conditional use permit” and that the ADU abide by both the general standards for short-term rentals and the specific standards for short-term rentals in ADUs as outlined in the city code.
City Council held a public hearing on the permit application, though no members of the public spoke. Council Member David Sigler moved to approve the application with the two recommended conditions. Council Member Leslie Straughan seconded the motion, which passed in a 6-0 vote.
