Artists in Cahoots, Virginia’s oldest artist-owned gallery, welcomes woodworker Richard Furman as its newest member. In celebration, a comprehensive collection of Furman’s work, including a live-edge, wild Black Cherry coffee table, figured Hickory charcuterie board, hardwood bowls, and elegant handcarved canes will be featured for the month of August. The public is invited to the opening reception this Friday, Aug. 2, from 5 to 7 p.m.
For 34 years Furman taught high school agricultural mechanics and Sciences – vocational shop class – giving him plenty of time to experiment with woodworking and expand is skills both on and off the clock. He also developed a philosophy of handcraft that is in play in all his current pieces. “Form, function, figure and finish are central to my work,” said Furman. “A piece must have the correct design for its intended use. It must also have some type of eye-catching grain, or figure, and a great finish.” Furman can invest more than 70 hours in a piece working to achieve that goal.
In addition to the reception Furman will be at the gallery on Saturday, Aug. 10, and Tuesday, Aug. 27, to chat about his work.
