In early June, four Lylburn Downing Middle School students traveled to the University of Maryland, College Park, to compete in the national competition for National History Day.
More than 600,000 students participated in the contest at local levels in 49 states, China, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Guam, and American Samoa. Only 3,000 qualified for national competition.
Sarah Edgar and Liesl Niebur’s website, “Sister Rat: Virginia Military Institute and the Admission of Women; The Battle for Equality in a Military Education,” included research compiled partially from personal interviews of former cadets and staff at VMI.
Joe Vargas, Emil Hierman and Ru Bucy’s website, “The Fight for Flights: How the North Atlantic Route Case Changed Commercial Aviation Forever,” was also developed using interviews and primary and secondary resources.
Vargas, Hierman, Edgar, and Niebur were all present for the national competition. Bucy was unable to attend.
