Aug. 7, 1974

A Galax youth was arrested for attempting to hold up a gas station with a firearm. The weapon turned out to be a water pistol. - Rockbridge County School Superintendent W. Herman Lee placed equal blame for low test scores on parents and teachers. He felt that some students were being coerced by their parents into taking college preparatory classes that they didn’t need to be taking. -A new business called the Little Baker Donut Shop was set to open in the building previously occupied by the First National Exchange Bank on East Nelson Street.

Dorothy Blackwell returned from a whirlwind week in Boston where she attended the Democratic National Convention and watched Sen. John Kerry accept his party’s nomination to run for president of the United States. - The J. Paul Getty Trust awarded Washington and Lee University a $150,000 Campus Heritage Grant to prepare a historic preservation master plan for its campus. - The tribute band Beatlemania was set to perform at the final Friday’s Alive event of the summer.
