After a hiatus of 24 years, the Maury River Middle School football program is returning at the end of this month.
Rockbridge County High School head football coach Martin Cox, in his third year of coaching the Wildcats, has been involved in bringing the program back for the first time since 2000, which former RC head football coach Jason White confirmed was the last time MRMS had a football program. White, director of operations and student services at Lexington City Schools, remembered the year because it was his first year at the high school.
Two of Cox’s assistant coaches, Dan Taylor and Joey Jones, will guide the MRMS Eagles, who are scheduled to start practicing on Monday, Aug. 26, at 3:45 p.m. on the MRMS football field.
Cox said bringing back the program is “a step in the right direction.”
With a lot of players who didn’t have middle school experience, the Wildcats struggled last year, going 0-10, following a 4-6 season two years ago.
Cox noted that, while the Rockbridge Area Recreation Organization has little league football, RARO has changed some of its rules, and having a football team allows MRMS players to get experience competing against other middle school teams.
“The high school needs a feeder program,” said Cox.
