The Relay for Life of Rockbridge County is calling on local businesses and organizations to join the fight against cancer by becoming event sponsors for the annual Relay for Life event, set to take place on Aug. 24, 2024, at Central Elementary School.
Relay for Life is a community-based event that brings together friends, families, businesses and neighbors to honor cancer survivors, remember those lost, and raise funds to help the American Cancer Society save lives. “By becoming a sponsor, you’ll not only be making a vital contribution to cancer research and patient services but also gaining visibility and goodwill within the community,” said a spokesperson for the event.
Sponsorship will directly support the American Cancer Society’s efforts in research, education, advocacy, and patient services. It also allows businesses to connect with community members who are passionate about making a positive impact. Businesses can also gain exposure through event promotions, signage and media coverage.
Employees of sponsoring businesses are encouraged to participate and show their company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility.

- During Relay for Life of Rockbridge County, the community is invited to come together for a poignant and inspiring Luminaria Ceremony at 9 p.m. This special event is a key part of the annual Relay for Life, dedicated to honoring cancer survivors, remembering loved ones lost, and fighting back against a disease that has affected so many.
The Luminaria Ceremony will begin at dusk, creating a serene atmosphere filled with thousands of glowing luminarias, each representing a life touched by cancer. These luminarias will line the walking track, symbolizing hope and the collective strength of our community in the battle against cancer.
Participants can dedicate a luminaria in honor or memory of a loved one by making a donation. Each luminaria will be personalized with the name of the person being honored or remembered, and participants are encouraged to share stories and memories.
Each luminaria bag can be decorated with names, messages, and drawings.
A unique part of the luminaria ceremony is the Hill of Hope. Gold luminaria bags are illuminated and spell out hope in remembrance of anyone that has lost their battle with cancer since the last Relay For Life of Rockbridge County event on Aug. 19, 2023.
Send email to Thomas Smals, event chair, at tsmals@outlook. com or call (540) 525-4306 to share the names of individuals to be recognized in Relay’s Hill of Hope. He is also the contact to purchase a $10 luminaria.
