Imagine knowing that, as a homebound neighbor opens her door, your face will be the only one she sees that day. You will smile, hand her a warm, nutritious meal, share a conversation, and ensure she’s safe. As a Meals on Wheels volunteer, you can have this kind of profound impact on many vulnerable older adults living in our community.
Senior hunger and isolation are affecting a growing number of our neighbors. Meals on Wheels is a proven solution that keeps homebound older adults safe, healthy and independent. In fact, research shows that Meals on Wheels recipients show improvement in physical and mental health, experience a reduced rate of falls, and worry less about being able to stay in their homes.
Typically, adults 60 years and older may be eligible to receive Meals on Wheels if they are: unable to leave home to attend regular social activities; unable to prepare meals for themselves; able to safely remain at home with meals as a support service; lacking meal support/preparation from family members or other individuals.
Volunteers are the heart of the program, providing compassionate meal delivery and safety checks for those in need. For many, it is a very rewarding role that brings more purpose and social connection to everyday life.
One volunteer reports: “I feel humbled when I am done' delivering meals. Some have even intervened during a medical emergency crisis, contacting emergency responders and waiting until help arrives. In this and so many other ways, Meals on Wheels volunteers are the eyes and ears of homebound older adults in our community.
In order to meet the growing demand for Meals on Wheels, more regular and substitute volunteers are needed in our area. Hours are flexible and rewards are countless.
