Aug. 14, 1974

Virginia Military Institute was designated a National Historic District by the Department of the Interior. VMI’s barracks had been awarded Historic National Landmark status in 1966. - Mel Greenberg, the conman who claimed to be making a movie about the Civil War in Rockbridge County, was back in town facing charges of defrauding an innkeeper and passing two bad checks. - Area football practice was underway at all four area high schools. New Parry McCluer High School football coach Bob Williams got the Blues off to a start with push-ups.

Aug. 18, 2004

Demolition began on the old Lexington firehouse on Jefferson Street. Lexington gained 31 more parking spaces in its place. - The rotting 122-yearold steeple that stood atop R.E. Lee Episcopal Church was removed. It would be replaced by a new one in a similar style. - The road running through Buena Vista’s new golf course was renamed Vista Links Drive.
