On Saturday, Aug. 17, Rockbridge Outdoors will join Kids in Parks to celebrate National Track Trails Day.
Kids in Parks, affiliated with the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, works to connect children and families to our nation’s public lands via their Track Trails. Its mission is to encourage children and parents to improve wellness by turning to nature and unplugging from the distractions of modern life.
Rockbridge County boasts five Track Trails for children and their families to enjoy. Each of these trails features a series of self-guided activities, with accompanying brochures geared for kids. Rockbridge Outdoors encourages families to enjoy one or several of these trails on Aug. 17 or anytime.
The Woods Creek Trail is a 2 ¼ mile one way hike that takes visitors along Woods Creek, traveling through nature in downtown Lexington. The Marl Creek Trail at Mc-Cormick Farm in Raphine is a scenic one-half mile hike featuring a variety of land and w ater h abitats. A t Glen Maury Park in Buena Vista, the Foxtrot Trail is a one-mile loop trail into the woods for a wealth of discoveries, featuring the Paw Paw tree. Natural Bridge State Park has two Track Trails. The Skyline Trail features views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the Thistle Ridge Nature Trail Disc Golf Course is designed for both beginners and advanced players.
Today, there are nearly 300 Track Trails across 18 states, Washington, D.C. and the eastern band of the Cherokee Nation, composing a national network of trails where childen and families can hike, bike, canoe, play disc golf and more – all while learning about the natural, cultural and historic resources located at each site. As a bonus, participants can earn free prizes in the mail for registering Kids in Parks adventures online.
