Registration is still open for teams to participate in this year’s Relay for Life event, taking place on Aug. 24 at Central Elementary School.
Area residents are also encouraged to attend the final planning meeting this week. The meeting will take place Thursday, Aug. 15, at 6:30 p.m. at Gina’s Trattoria.
The relay itself will run from 7 to 10 p.m. next Saturday. Relay for Life is a community-based fundraising event for the American Cancer Society that brings together teams of friends, family members, coworkers, and neighbors to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and take action to help achieve a world without cancer.
Highlights of the event include the opening ceremony, during which the lives of those who have battled cancer are celebrated; the Survivor Lap, which honors cancer survivors; the luminaria ceremony in which loved ones lost to cancer are remembered; and the closing ceremony during which participants can reflect on the impact of the day and renew their commitment to the fight against cancer.
Those interested in forming a team are encouraged to invite friends, coworkers and others to join a team and then register online at www.relayforlife.org/rockbridgeva. Teams can use the tools and resources provided on the website to raise funds and spread awareness about the fight against cancer.
